We Know God Through His Spirit

 No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. – 1 Corinthians 2:11-12

 We can know about God by reading his word, but we cannot know God until we are born of the Holy Spirit. Throughout this month we will be taking a look at how we come to know God and how God reveals himself to us.

It is the attitude of many in the world that they get to know God by looking inside themselves because they believe that God is in all of mankind and we just need to release the god-person inside us to gain understanding.

There is some truth in that belief; but it is not the whole truth. The truth is that there is a place for God in all of us, but that place is not found by looking inside ourselves but by looking to the Lord himself as he is revealed in the person of Christ.

Paul is telling us in this passage that we can know ourselves (v11, “Who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him?), but we can only know God through his Spirit. God does not desire to be hidden from us, but there is a protocol that must be followed to release the knowledge of God through his Spirit that he places in us.

The way to know God is very simple. First we must receive the knowledge of Christ. We must, by faith, commit ourselves to Christ. When we do that the Holy Spirit is released into us and we are then qualified to know God in a personal way.

Once we have taken those steps toward God then we learn to seek him through communion with his Spirit. As we humbly seek him and submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he reveals himself to us.

God has words of peace, comfort and instruction that he releases to us through our communion and fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

 Principle:  There is a protocol that must be followed to release the Spirit.

 Affirmation: I am committed to knowing God through his Spirit.

 Prayer: Lord, I know the answers to life are not in me but in you. Grant me the grace to know you through the Holy Spirit. In Jesus name, amen.
