The Feast of Booths – A Time to Remember

Daily God Walk for Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days… Rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. Celebrate this festival to the Lord for seven days each year… Live in booths… so that your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. – Leviticus 23:39-43

Even while they were still wandering in the desert, living in tents, God was giving the Israelites instructions on how to be thankful and celebrate their deliverance. The Festival of Tabernacles, or Booths, is a festival of celebration.

Moses wrote that there were three times a year that the entire nation was to appear before God; the Passover, the Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles. Each had it’s significance to the people of Israel. Passover celebrated their exit from Egypt, Weeks celebrated the blessing of harvest and Tabernacles celebrated how God kept them through their time of dwelling in tents in the wilderness.

Each of these festivals are punctuated with remembering and with being thankful for the bountiful blessings of God. It would be good for all of us to set aside periods of time when we remember God’s many and wonderful blessings and celebrate His Goodness.

Can you remember when God brought you out of your Egypt? Have you had times of wandering in the desert of life not knowing where you would be tomorrow, or what would be happening? I think we have all been there at one time or another, but thanks to God we haven’t had to stay there.

Many of us set aside a day during this month that we call “Thanksgiving.” It is a time of family gathering together and during those times we often tell family stories of the past and remember the good times. I would encourage you that during this period that you set aside times to show your thankfulness to God for His many and bountiful blessings.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for your many wonderful blessings.
