Christ Calls, “Follow Me”

Daily God Walk for Tuesday, August 2, 2011

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.                                                      – Matthew 4:18-19

Those who would become his disciples must have been very impressed by what they saw in Jesus for when he called to them to follow him they immediately abandoned their fishing nets and boats to follow him.

Jesus was not asking them to take a vacation to follow him for a little while; he was asking them to make a life changing decision to follow him for a lifetime.

These were fishermen and they understood about the process of catching fish, but they were intrigued and challenge by the offer of Jesus to follow him. He told them that if they followed him he would change their occupation. They would still be fishermen, but now they would be fishers of men.

When I was a child I heard that call to become a fisher of men. At 13 I had a dream about the war which ended the world as we know it. I remember that the whole world was destroyed and I awoke with the thought that all those people died and didn’t know Jesus.

At 16 I received a definite call to preach the gospel and responded. It was in a prayer time that God spoke to me about preaching the gospel as I prayed for hours. That call has driven my life for nearly 50 years.

I wonder if you have ever heard the master call, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” It is an honor to represent Christ and his kingdom, but it is also an awesome responsibility. We are given the responsibility of presenting the gospel to world which has a dying hope and does not know him.

Can you hear him call you to follow him?

Prayer: Lord, call men and women to be fishers of men. Amen.
