Speaking Power Filled Words

Daily God Walk for Monday, January 10, 2011

When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest in men’s wisdom, but on God[s power.           – 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

The pulpits of Christian churches around the world are filled with some of the greatest orators in the world. There is power in the spoken word to stimulate our intellect and to motivate us to action, but are mere words of men able to effect a change in the hearts of men? Can mans words alone affect the eternal destiny of other men?

In this passage Paul is telling the church at Corinth that he did not come to impress them with oratory but reveal to them the power of God.

There is a story of a conference where two men were scheduled to speak on the 23rd Psalm. The first to speak was a young man, fresh out of seminary. Stepping to pulpit with dignity, and not a little pride, he delivered an oratorical masterpiece. When he was finished the crowd erupted in applause.

The second man to speak, a pastor who had been through many struggles in his ministry, moved slowly to the pulpit and with bowed head he began to speak on the 23rd Psalm. With cracking voice he spoke of the Shepherd who had led him to green pastures and through the valley of the shadow of death. When he was finished the audience was hushed as each one pulled their handkerchief to wipe their eyes.

“What was the difference in the two men,” someone asked. The answer came; the first knew the Shepherds Psalm and the second knew the Shepherd of the Psalm.

Prayer: Lord, help me to speak your word in such a way that people are more impressed with your power than my oratory.
