You Will Know Them By Their Fruit

Daily God Walk for Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?    – Matthew 7:15-16

A false prophet is not someone who does not agree with my doctrine; a false prophet is one who claims to be a sincere minister of God’s word and who in fact is actually most concerned about promoting his own agenda. And his own agenda usually includes either gaining a power, or control, advantage over others or gaining a financial advantage.

Jesus is warning us to consider the fruit of a person’s life before we commit to following them. He spent a good deal of time exposing the hypocrisy of religious leaders in his day and we would do well to observe some of the things he observed.

At one time when we were involved in an outreach ministry a friend recommended someone to us who could help us with the business end of the ministry. This person was supposed to have successfully managed a number of businesses and was good at making a business profitable.

In a short time we discovered that this man was actually trying to take the ministry from us and was actually visiting places no minister should go and representing himself as owning our property. After a doing a little investigation we discovered that he had lost his previous businesses due to unscrupulous practices and he owed gambling debts around town.

We went through some hardship in the early days of that ministry because we were not careful to discern a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is wise to look at the fruit of a person’s life before you take seriously what they say.

We should all be cautioned to look at the fruit of our own lives as well. The fruit that grows on our tree of life is a representation of the life that is in us. What is your fruit like?

Principle:  The fruit of your life reflects the person you really are.

Affirmation: I look at my fruit often to be sure I am right on the inside.

Prayer: Lord, give me wisdom to look inside and examine my own life, and give me to ability to discern wolves in sheep’s clothing
